Professional Dynamics Programs (PDP) and Syntrak: Driving Resiliency at Grand Forks Air Force Base

Integrated Prevention teams around the world face significant challenges in fostering resiliency, mitigating suicide risks, reducing DUIs, and increasing engagement among service members. At Grand Forks Air Force Base, the implementation of the Professional Dynametrics Programs (PDP) achieved groundbreaking results, demonstrating how PDP behavioral assessments, mentoring, and workshops can transform command climates and improve the lives of airmen.

Through the leadership of Father John Kinney and Wing Commander Colonel Michel, 14 certified PDP Mentors worked one-on-one with 600 airmen over ten months, embedding PDP practices into daily operations. New airmen completed the ProScan behavioral assessment on their first day, followed by personalized debriefs and mentoring sessions. These sessions addressed individual needs, guiding airmen toward additional resources such as financial planning, relationship counseling, or stress management programs. The result was a dramatic cultural shift on base, with tangible metrics to prove its success:

  • Suicide attempts decreased by 30%
  • DUI rates were reduced by 50%
  • Engagement in base activities increased by an astonishing 300%.

 Path to Success

A key to PDP’s success was the involvement of leaders at all levels. Col Michel set the tone by publicly sharing his ProScan data, fostering transparency and trust. Monthly mentor meetings allowed mentors to share insights and adapt their approaches, while a base-wide newsletter kept everyone informed about the program’s progress. The initiative also introduced creative engagement strategies, such as cooking classes, a teen activity den, and a bistro restaurant, which strengthened community bonds and provided airmen with safe and enjoyable outlets.

These efforts captured the attention of senior leadership, including a 4-star general who visited the base and provided funding to expand PDP initiatives. The impact extended beyond metrics, as individual airmen reported feeling a renewed sense of belonging and purpose.

Implement PDP on Your Base
